Albatross sails

Projeto Tamar Brazil/Marine Photobank

The albatross sails
over the stormy sea
From the lofty heights
storm is a spectacle to see

The feathers flutter
the icy winds oppose
But it flies calm
Focussed on the purpose it knows

The keen eyes search
For food below
It flies high
Sometimes it swoops low

To find something to eat,
And some in the beak to store
To feed the hungry little mouths
Waiting in the nest on shore

The keen eyes don’t miss
Shining scales are spotted
The bird dives
Closing in on what it wanted

It strikes the water
Swoops on the feed
In a practiced motion
Hunts for just the need

wings flap to fly
But in vain
The nets trap the wings
It cries in pain

The nets entangle
Cuts into the wings
It looks to the shore
In melancholy it sings

It was taught to fly
To hunt for what it could feed
Who knew of the net laid
By the hunter who eats for his greed

It’s cries are drowned
In the roar of the sea
The hungry mouths on the shore cry
Forlorn eyes look expectantly to thee
